Top Five Common Communication Challenges in Relationships
How many of you had parents, family, friends, teachers, or classes that taught you not only how to communicate but how to do it well? Did they give you advice or a plan on how to avoid or resolve arguments with others? Did they demonstrate to you how important listening is to effective communication? Did they show you how to express anger, or resolve conflict in a positive way?
Communication can make or break our relationships! I know that sounds scary. What if I’m not communicating right? What if I say the wrong thing? But it’s true! Not so good communication leads to misunderstandings, resentment, anger, and in the end broken relationships.
Few people have good communication skills but the good news is… It’s never too late to learn.
Here is one super common communication mistake that you might be making, and you don’t even realize it:
Common Challenge #1: Interrupting.
What does it say to a friend or intimate partner when you interrupt them? The message you are sending says, “What I have to say is far more important than what you have to say.”
That’s not a very nice message, is it? Women tend to interrupt more than men. Women feel their excitement deeper and want to share their message right away. Also, there is a fear that they could forget what they were planning to say or the point they were going to make. Generally speaking, men tend to do this in the boardroom more as a power play.
Regardless, it still says, “I’m more important than you.”
